Nothing spells out disaster quite like when you find your refrigerator not cool. Don’t panic just yet. We’re here to walk you through the steps to take when your refrigerator isn’t cold.
Refrigerator Not Cool? Here’s What to Do
If you’re worried about your food going to waste because your refrigerator is warm, we’ve got you covered. Depending on the problem, you may be able to resolve the issue yourself!
Clean the Refrigerator Coils
Your refrigerator not cooling could be an indication of dirty condenser coils. The coils function to release heat as refrigerant runs through them. Dust and pet dander can build up quickly on condenser coils, causing them to not function correctly. If the coils are the cause of your refrigerator’s cooling issues, you’ll find your refrigerator is loud and runs constantly.
We recommend cleaning the coils at least every 6 months. If you have pets, you should clean them more frequently. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to clean condenser coils. All you’ll need is a face mask, an appliance cleaning brush, and a vacuum with a long attachment. Just follow these steps:
- Unplug the unit and locate the coils on the bottom or back panel
- Use a long appliance brush to loosen dust and debris
- Vacuum the coils and you’re done!

Keep Your Food Safe
If you cleaned the refrigerator coils and you still find your refrigerator not cool after 24 hours, it may be time to call in the professionals. In the meantime, you need to safely store your food so it doesn’t all go to waste. Grab a portable cooler and organize your food as follows:
- Bottom: frozen food from the freezer
- Middle: refrigerated food
- Top: another layer of frozen food
Note: If you don’t have enough frozen food, spread a layer of ice as the top and bottom layers.
