Both gas and electric clothes dryers have their pros and cons, and some say one type lasts longer than the other, but it requires regular maintenance to keep any style of dryer running properly. By following these maintenance tips, I make sure that my dryer continues to perform at top efficiency so I’m never stuck needing to visit the laundromat:

Never overload your dryer

Overloading the dryer may seem like a way to save time, but putting too much laundry in at once actually extends drying time and can wear out the machine prematurely. Clothing needs air circulation to dry, so I only put one reasonably sized load in at a time.

Use the right fabric softener

Whenever I can, I use liquid fabric softener when washing my clothes because it minimizes wrinkles and static electricity. I prefer liquid fabric softener to using dryer sheets because the sheets can leave residue on the inside of my machine that attracts grease, lint and debris that can clog filters.

Clean the lint filter with every load

Lint can cause costly damage to clothes dryers and cause a fire hazard, so I make sure I clean the lint filter before every new load or after the last load. Once a week, I wipe down the inside of my dryer to remove residual lint. I also schedule a professional cleaning annually to ensure my unit is as lint-free as possible.

Clean the outside

Lint collects everywhere, including on the outside of the dryer, so I wipe down the outside periodically to remove any accumulated lint. I own an electric dryer and unplug it before cleaning, but if I had a gas dryer, I’d turn off the gas supply and be very careful with my cleaning. After I’ve moved the unit out slightly to clean behind it, I put it back where it was and maintain proper space between the walls and my appliance.

Clean the inside

Once a month, I unplug my clothes dryer and clean the inside using a mild cleaner consisting of water and vinegar. This cleaner removes stains and dirt that can transfer to my clothing and keeps my dryer running efficiently.

Clean the venting system

Debris, dirt and lint can accumulate inside the ventilation tube and cap of my clothes dryer system, so I periodically clean out the tube and cap with a cloth or cleaning brush. If it’s been a while since I cleaned these areas, I hire a professional to clean the venting system thoroughly.
