What to do When a Strange Smell Comes From Your Dishwasher | A-Tech

Have you noticed a strange smell coming from your dishwasher? This likely is accompanied by the water levels not completely draining out of the dishwasher following a load. The undesirable smell permeating from dishwashers such as your is food decomposing somewhere within the appliance. If you don’t do anything the smell will only linger. Here are a few tips as to what you need to do should your dishwasher begin to smell.

Check Dishwashers

Remove all dishes and trays on the bottom of the dishwasher. Remove any food particles stuck to the bottom, then check the drainage area. There likely is a small screen in place. Remove the screen (it may pop off or have screw holding it in place, depending on the make and model). With the screen off you can check for sludge and food particles. If you are not able to remove any food particles there is a strong chance the clogged food is further down in the dishwasher.

Run and Clean the Garbage Disposal

There is a chance the smell coming up through your dishwasher is actually from the garbage disposal. If your garbage disposal is not running correctly, chances are even greater the smell is coming from the device and you need to have it serviced. If the disposal is running correctly, use a garbage disposal cleaning product (these are inexpensive and found in the dishwashing section of your grocery store). Once complete, run another load in the dishwasher to see if the problem persists.
